Thoughts on continuing

I just recently moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin and just started a new job there. One of the cool facts that I shared was that I have my own personal website. Someone at work found my website and asked if I would be willing to do their family pictures. I had to tell her that I haven't found any photography locations in the Milwaukee area so I wouldn't even know where to start. She told me that once I was ready I should let her know and she has friends who would also want good family pictures and she would be able to get me a few family shoots. Anyway this has got me thinking. Do I want to start up doing photography here? But I have a couple of  disadvantages  one I don't know the area well yet (I can pretty much get to the grocery store and work and back to my house and that's it) second I don't have any indoor studio so I am limited to only doing photography in the spring/summer when I can get natural light. I also work full time which means my hours are limited when i can do photoshoots and then every hour after work is spent editing and getting the pictures just right. Also I prefer doing portraits and couples (although I have only done one family shoot and that was with 6 kids so I might enjoy doing smaller families I just haven't tried yet) and I am not sure how many opportunities I will get to do couples and portraits. I imagine most of my shoots would be small families.
But I really do enjoy doing photography. I enjoy interacting with people so I can take their pictures. I enjoy getting home uploading the pictures on my computer and seeing what I was able to capture. I know I still need a lot of improvement and the only way I can truly improve is by continuing to take pictures. If I were to conitnue taking pictures I would need to find a cheap and easy way to advertise a little bit or some how get my name out there.
Or do I just keep practicing as if I am going to be taking lots of photo shoots but don't advertise and just wait for people to come to me.

Anyway just have been thinking a lot. Would love your comments and ideas.

  1. You are great - as long as you love it, you should keep going. You can use google as your guide at first and also ask your "models" if they have any suggestions. You'll figure out a few awesome spots soon. As for a studio, you can make one easily with a large roll of white paper... You're creative and if you love it, you'll make it work.

    Best of luck!
